Baxter Healthcare Corporation (Baxter) asked Evergreen Research, Inc. (ERI) to assist them by designing an optional camera accessory for their DoseEdge IV Compounder System to obtain images of intravenous (IV) bags and bottles for hospital and pharma quality control. ERI has previously helped Baxter design the DoseEdge EM2400 Compounder. It is a product for which ERI currently manufactures select component and subsystems. Images of uniquely-shaped, liquid-filled IV bags, bottles, etc. needed to be captured quickly in any orientation with a camera accessory, while allowing for adequate clarity for Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
ERI engineers identified an approach using an array of illumination elements mounted around the camera with a range of different polarizations. This allowed the camera image capture to eliminate glare and produce a legible and OCR-compatible image in varying ambient lighting conditions from labels on a broad range of curved surfaces.
Baxter qualified ERI as a “critical level” supplier, which authorizes ERI to ship The DoseEdge Camera directly to hospitals and medical centers as directed by Baxter. ERI manufactures the DoseEdge Camera for Baxter and has delivered over 2,000 cameras to date with excellent reliability and customer satisfaction.
